HCS RESTORES SALARY INCREASES OF NEARLY 2 PERCENT NEWS ENTERPRISEBy KELLY R. CANTRALL Hardin County Schools teachers will receive normal raises based on the number of years they ve worked, thanks to a new pot of federal money. The step increase for HCS will be restored to approximately 1.8 percent after it was reduced to 0.5 percent in June. Congress recently passed an EduJobs bill, which gives states money to help retain teaching positions and salaries. Kentucky received about $134 million. HCS will use its portion to give teachers experience-based raises. The federal funding will offset the shortfall in state funding, said Gary Milby, associate superintendent for finance and support services. This is just restoring what normally would have happened, Milby said. The board also voted to reinstate the typical 1 percent salary increase for administrative and extra service increments, which are stipends paid to personnel such as counselors, assistant principals and coaches. The board had voted to freeze their pay in June. Superintendent Nannette Johnston said teachers would see the increase on paychecks at the end of September. Kelly R.
